phpBB SEO EasyMOD

Quite some time ago Able2Know.com released a mod for phpBB that would make your URLs static.
The point is so that search engines can index your site better. Even google itself says “If you decide to use dynamic pages (i.e., the URL contains a “?” character), be aware that not every search engine spider crawls dynamic pages as well as static pages. It helps to keep the parameters short and the number of them few.”
Unfortunately due to the way phpBB was originally designed, it has its fair share of URLs containing a “?” character. This script is designed to eliminate this.
The phpBB SEO mod is a two part mod:
- Able2Know.com Search Engine Optimization 2.0.0 – This modifies phpBB to accommodate friendly URLs
- phpBB static URLs mod_rewrite 1.0.0 – This modifies phpBB for mod_rewrite urls, writes to the .htaccess to enable the mod_rewrite urls, and adds a robots.txt to stop search engines indexing things they shouldn’t.
With both combined it does the following:
- Remove the “View Latest Post” icon and link on index.php – reduce number of links for better performance
- Make the date of the last post link to the last post like the icon did on index.php – for better crawling
- Unlink the username of the last post on index.php – reduce number of links for better performance
- Remove listing of moderators on index.php – reduce number of links for better performance
- Remove session IDs for all search engine spiders – forces URLs to be less dynamic looking
- Unlink the username of the last post on viewforum.php – reduce number of links for better performance
- Remove the “View Latest Post” icon and link on viewforum.php – reduce number of links for better performance
- Make the date of the last post link to the last post like the icon did on viewforum.php – for better crawling
- Unlink the author username on viewforum.php – reduce number of links for better performance
- Remove signatures for guest views – reduce number of irrelevant links for better performance
- Remove avatars for guest views – reduce bandwidth usage when search engines crawl
- Remove personal info (Profile, IM, PM, AIM, etc) for guest views – reduce bandwidth, privacy, and better performance
- Unlink the username of the last post on search.php – reduce number of links for better performance
- Remove the “View Latest Post” icon and link on search.php – reduce number of links for better performance
- Make the date of the last post link to the last post like the icon did on search.php – for better crawling
- Unlink the author username on search.php – reduce number of links for better performance
- Link the user post count to a search of the user’s posts – drives more traffic this way
- Make Auth list on viewtopic.php invisible to search engines – irrelevant information for guests and search engines
- Make the previous and next topic links invisible to search engines – search engines index these links incorrectly
- Removes the sitename from page titles, improving keyword weight – with the sitename gone from the title, it means the post subject can take centre stage meaning more relevant searching.
- Change the page title of the index page to a hardcoded site name because of the site name removal – This can be skipped.
- Hide forum stats from guests and spiders – Pointless information for non-members.
- Static URLs with mod_rewrite – for guests and search engines only, it makes it easy for them to index the pages as if they were static pages. Logged in users can use the dynamic URLs.
My only gripe with this mod was that it didn’t work with EasyMOD, EasyMOD as the name suggests makes it easy to install phpBB mods. However, to do so, mods must fall in-line with the phpBB EasyMod standards. Unfortunately the SEO mod did not do this.
So I set out to achieve just that.
- Download phpBB SEO EasyMOD
Notes:
- This mod is designed to work with phpBB v2.0 and above.
- You may wish to try SEO URLs V2 instead, however that mod is still BETA.
- It is said that this mod will no longer be required in phpBB v3.0 and beyond.

Great work.
It’s easier for many to be able to install mods with EZmod.
Maybe I’m not out if I give a link to some more efficient URL rewriting mods (zero duplicate) for phpBB2 and phpBB3 :
http://www.phpbb-seo.com/boards/
The advanced version for phpBB3 is demonstrated here : http://phpbb3.phpbb-seo.net/
Hope you like it.

I’m fixing the bugs on our forum. Your mod that does this “Unlink the username of the last post on index.php – reduce number of links for better performance” only takes out the first part of the link. Where is the code so I can stop it from doing this as it has left a load of ’s causing the forum to no longer validate.

I think (IMHO): now crowlers ignored differents in URL – with “?” and without them. But without “?” more beaty

hi, i did install easymod (i think, since there’s a .MOD in the menu item when logged in as admin). when i downloaded your phpbb seo easymod version, they’re in .mod
and in it are instructions how to manually install them? i thought easymod would handle everything? if so, where should the .mod files be placed? thanks

Hello Everybody
Just wanted to share my new experience.
If your Windows XP fails to start due to an error related to lost HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other critical system boot files you can fix this by using the XP installation CD. Just boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then launch “attrib -H -R -S” on the C:\Boot.ini file and delete it. Launch “Bootcfg /Rebuild” and then Fixboot
Cheers,
Carl
