IHTOOM pmp

Despite my problems with purchasing mp4 players in the past I decided to purchase a new one.

This time I found a good one from a reputable website that sold items from China across the world, instead of eBay.

This device is also known as the Black Hawk MP4 Digital Player or mini Play Station Portable or IHTOOM personal media player.

IHTOOM pmp

The mp4 player is boasted to have the following features:

  • NES games console
  • 3.0 Mega Pixel lens
  • digital camera/webcam
  • video camera recording
  • mp3/audio player
  • mp4/video player
  • 3″ TFT screen
  • AV in and AV out
  • build-in speakers
  • 1GB internal memory
  • SD card socket
  • calendar/time/e-books/alarm clock
  • microphone for voice recording
  • hold button
  • built-in rechargable battery

This device is fantastic. The only thing it doesn’t do is make phone calls, but for the price I cannot complain.

From the outset I liked this device, and looked forward to its arrival. One thing I am aware of is that it’s never going to be an amazing build, but this didn’t bother me.

It arrives and I immediately begin to examine the contents of the package.

PMP Box Contents

The box contain: 1x pmp device; 1x white ear phones with a 3.5mm jack; 1x Male USB A to Male USB mini 5 USB cable; RCA to 3.5MM AV cable; 100-240V AC Main Charger (50/60Hz USA plugs 2 pin); GB travel power adapter; Driver/Software CD; English User Manual.

IHTOOM pmp device

I begin by trying out the camera facility and took some photos. The photos turn out okay, but are somewhat grainy, but tolerable for a 3.0 Mega Pixel. I noticed there was what looked liked a flash, but it didn’t actually have the option for a flash, so I believe there is no flash, but then again it was never said there would be a flash, it was just assumed.

chinese mp3 player woman

This photo came with the device, I guess they tested it before sending it out.
Another thing worth noting is that the date was wrong, when I received the device it said “2005.05.15″.

I also tried out the video recording, which was tollerable, only 320×240, but not bad. Apparently you can use the device as a webcam too, but I have yet to try this.

I also tried out one or two of the NES games, which seem to be slow. I think this probably is a problem with the device decoding the NES games. I could probably cope with that as I didn’t buy this to play games, even though it looks like a playstation portable (PSP).

I decided to plug it into my computer and load some media onto it. I discovered that the connector into the device was the same as my Motorola mobile phone which was fantastic as it means I could swap between the two without having more cables. One thing I did discover is that when you have your device plugged into USB it does not appear to allow you to switch to normal mode unless you unplug the device from the USB.

Also, the battery seems to wear down after a long period of time being plugged into the USB suggesting that it does not charge via the USB, having said this you can use the DC input at the same time.

I tried transferring some mp3s onto the device, in the form of files and folders, however when I turned on the device and looked for the files, they didn’t exist. I discovered that I must put the mp3s directly into the mp3s folder before I can view them on the device for playback. This was frustrating.

That aside the audio playback has some good features, including repeat, random, equalise and A-B. The bad features are that there is no search feature, files are listed in the 8.3 filename format (which is ugly), and as I said before, there’s no option for folders.

One of the most annoying issues with the video and audio play back functions is that there’s no resume. You can’t resume to the last track or video you were playing, let alone resume to the point you were listening to before you turned the device off.

After some time I realised that the beep noise when you scrolled between items on the menu was getting very annoying. At first I could not figure out how to turn this off, but soon discovered that you can turn this off via the Setup, under a section called “Sleep Off”, its simply a case of setting BEEP to OFF.

Despite this, I decided to convert a video clip to ASF format. I was very impressed by the quality of the video. There was no ghosting, and the picture was very clear. I was very impressed. So impressed I had to say it twice.

A subtle feature I liked was the stand on the back of the device which you can pull out and use it to make it stand up but slightly leaned back, meaning you can stand the player on your desk and watch your favourite TV program or whatever you decide to put on your device.

I decided to then try the bundled ear phones, which are standard fit (3.5mm not 2.5mm). My initial problem was that if I was using the stand, I could not use the ear phones, as the socket is on the bottom of the device, this is simply down to bad design, but tolerable.

The next problem with the ear phones was that when I had them plugged in, the built-in speakers were still being used. At first I thought that I would be unable to use this device in public. However, I soon discovered that there was an option to turn the speakers off under Setup -> Sleep Off.

In terms of physical design, the only “bad ideas” are the rubber “flap” for the SD card, which I can imagine will fall off at some point. I am also under the impression that the stand I mentioned above would probably be very easy to break off.

IHTOOM pmp base

One of my pet hates is power buttons that you have to hold down to turn the device on. I wish it was simply a switch, similar to the hold button, this would make it far easier to turn on and off.

I also wish this device had better volume control. I find with all of these devices that the volume control is digital, you have to turn on the device to control the volume, yet my walkman tape player from years ago was able to have a physical volume control, why can’t we have these on our new devices?

I’m surprised this device doesn’t have is an FM radio, most of the other MP4 players have a built in FM radio, but not this one, I’m not sure why as it’s a simple feature to include.

Conclusion

This device is worse than I expected. I was hoping that some of the issues experienced with other imported devices would have been resolved, but it seems that is not the case.

If I was to improve this device, I would do the following:

  • Change the power button to a switch (on/off state)
  • Better volume control, such as a scroller
  • Better SD card cover
  • Charge from USB
  • Better display of mp3 filenames
  • Ability to search MP3s
  • MP3s should be able to playback from folders
  • Playback resume
  • Better game decoding
  • More game decoding (GBA games?)
  • AV in/out should be more accessible, not on the bottom
  • Speakers should turn off automatically upon plugging the ear phones in

It sure is no Sony PSP, return to sender.

I’ve boxed mine up now, so from memory.

If you go into the misc options, then find record, its in there…

Use the cable provided to plug in the AV-in, and the other end goes into the AUX output on your TV/device.

    Its pretty simple really.

    Hi,
Are you sure that the game you try is NES game? I have this device also, but I can not play ANY NES (xxxxxxx.NES rom file) game. If so, how can you play NES game ?

    Thank you,

The device came with NES games already on it, they were .NES files. They were very slow.

    Its all in the manual…

    So,
I think our device has different firmware. In my manual, there is nothing about NES game. And also, in the menu, there is no icon that is related to NES GAME. I only have two game icons, one is PMP Game and Game. When I press PMP Game, it say : “NO GAME CARD” and Game is only consist of two games : Snake and Tetris …

Do you know how to upgrade this IHTOOM pmp firmware?
Mine is also “IHTOOM pmp” (when it is powered up), but the brand is Ixus X111 (with the very same visual with yours) …

    Thank’s anyway,

I have one too. I like the fact that it does almost everything. But I hate the 8.3 filenames and the slow NES emulator. I also fear the battery won’t last long, but it’s yet to prove itself (I got it yesterday).

Because so little is known about this player I decided to open a topic for it, where we can all help eachother answer all the questions around this player. If you have an IHTOOM PMP, then read here: http://www.chaozz.nl/forum/index.php?topic=496.0

Hope we can figure everything out together!

I also have one of this and I agreed mostly with everything describe above but the function I use most and I bought it for is the video player and believe me I used to have the same problems that you are having now and the person I bought it from, didn’t know anything about it and they just included me a copy of the software cd so I had to handle by myself, but now I can tell you I have no problem using any of the function of my ITHOOM PMP player and now I enjoy very much downloading my favourite videos from YouTube and playing them in my device. So if you have any question or problem with PMP and I could help you, I’ll do it with joy by writing me to the e-mail ( )

Hi I bought my IHTOOM PMP in Singapore i can play video(.asf) and mp3s all right but mine came without the game sd card so I have not been able to play any games other than snake and tetris. Any help on how to play/load/save other games would be nice. You said it plays nes games but i tried putting NES games in a sd card but it stll did not work… :(
But with a 1GB internal space and the 2 x 1GB and 1x 4GB sd cards which i bought i can have tons mp3s and movies/animes to hear/watch. I think its better to buy several small size sd cards for mp3 files, since u cannot create folders or playlists. This lets u to browse down to the mp3 file you want to listen to faster. Also, this pmp can access sd cards very quickly :)
Btw my pmp has a 2.4″ tft screen and a 2 mega pixel camera and I bought it for S$129(about 85USD)
Please email me if you need help or have information on how to add games etc.

I have had this device for several months. I was very frustrated with the pmp transcoder that came with it. Version 4 or 5 that come up on Google searches appear to be the same one. The problem is that files transcoded with high quality audio end up being huge compared to your typical MP4 divx file. This is because the audio is uncompressed.

I tried other transcoding tools, but couldn’t get my ASF files to play. I assumed the player didn’t have enough processing power to both decompress audio and video at the same time. Then I downloaded PMPTranscoder 9.2.0.zip through a file sharing appication. I have no idea where it can be downloaded, or who wrote it. It transcodes a file with compressed audio, so they are not any larger than a typical MP4 file of similar quality. And guess what? They play just fine on my Ihtoom PMP. I have only used the 128k 44.1khz audio streams. A full movie takes up less than a Gig at the highest video quality settings.

When I install the software, what appear to be error messages come up, saying that I needed to install the storm video codec package, the quicktime alternative program and divx codec. This appears to be more informational, and not some sort of diagnostic. I already had Divx installed and a some other codecs. I am pretty sure you need Divx. I downloaded Storm and quicktime alternative, but haven’t installed them, since codecs packages tend to interfere with one another. So far I haven’t had any difficulties.

Here are a couple of screenshots:

I am a little concerned about putting the actual installation file up on my free webspace since I have no idea who owns it, but will look for a solution to that problem.

OK, I was just analizing some my video streams, and it appears that the settings in the audio settings box do nothing. The audio is coming out at 384k or 256k depending on the audio input. This is so much better than the 1536kbs stream the other transcoder puts out that I assumed it was actually compressing down to 128k. The audio sounds great. I will post a file for others to analyze.

I have been converting mpeg2 transport streams captured on my computer through the firewire port on my digital cable box and playing them back on my PMP. I had been happy with the file sizes and the way they sounded and looked on the ihtoom. Now that I have started analyzing my results and experimenting with different file types; I have found why the more common program doesn’t compress the audio.

I have been lucky. The results are somewhat unpredictable depending on the type of file that is being converted. 16bit stereo audio at 48khz compressed to less than 384kbs starts getting distorted. I am assuming the processor cannot keep up. I am going to try and post some files for analysis and the program.

Hello, i have just received 10 of these items, and i can not get any of them to charge, my charger consists of 2 part the wall charger and a usb wire that has a standard cylyndrical power output at the end. when i pplug it to the pmp nothing happens, it doesnt charge, when i take out that wire and put the usb to mini usb and try to charge it that way, it shows me the usb screen and the charging indicator is going up, but to fully charge it this method it took me 16 hours, then i tried plugging it to the computer and it showed me the same usb screen with the charging indicator flashing, but it didnt charge at all this way, it actually ran out of battery. What am i supposed to do?

Here is one good converter for video and audio.
Max supported resolution for this player is 480×360 around 600-700kbps whitout lag. I usually choose the original framerate and original video bitrate. The audio stream must be:
audio channel - auto, audio codec - auto, sampling rate - custom 44100 hz, bitrate - original or system default
if you want to put subtitle in the movie, click on advanced settings, and choose one. than to the right from subtitles click settings and choose font and the size of it. perfect subtitle size for this resolution is “38″. now you can convert it and transfered it to your PMP.
the serial key for this program is - 0ab52023-ba00347e-9fa86acd-fdc330a9-68578b7e-264b81e1-30bdfeef-cea403fa-20457e4a-39c03409-f69a9aba-388e8a94-677044c7-643fe9ac-66523c91-18a61801
